WHAT IS A KNEE
WALKER?
We offer the widest selection and most innovative Knee Walkers/Knee Scooters
A knee walker is a medical mobility device (also called a knee scooter or mobility scooter) that provides a safe, comfortable and easy-to-operate alternative to crutches for patients who need to not bear weight on their foot and/or leg during recovery after a below-the-knee injury or surgery.
Knee walkers are designed to reduce weight bearing and help patients with injuries such as: fractures, diabetic wounds/ulcers, Achilles tendon tears, ankle sprains, or foot/ankle surgery. They can also be used for permanent mobility after partial or complete foot amputation or while waiting for wound healing and/or prosthesis to be fitted.
Knee walkers utilize an elevated padded platform to support the knee and provide continuous support for the injured limb. This design allows the user to naturally balance on both legs, rather than using only one leg like a crutch. You can then move on your own by pushing off with your good leg and steer the device by turning the handle to steer the front wheel. Your injured leg will remain elevated and completely weight-free during operation.
Knee walkers help you recover while maintaining mobility
Before the invention of knee walkers, patients had no choice but to limit their movements during rehabilitation and use crutches or wheelchairs when necessary. These options can make it challenging to move freely and go about your daily life. With crutches, your arms support your body weight and your arms and upper back are used for mobility. With a knee walker, your larger leg muscles are used to support your body as the wheels turn and you move freely.
Using these larger muscles means less upper body pain, less physical fatigue, and less chance of reinjury if you lose balance and drop your injured leg to the ground. Another benefit of a knee walker over crutches is that you can stand with your hands free - this allows the user to complete many daily tasks at home, at work or on the go.
Modern knee walkers come with bicycle-like handlebars and handbrakes, allowing the user to steer, navigate and stop easily. They are also often foldable for easy carrying. Some models come with a basket when purchased.
